Challenges of Medicine
Only 3% of diseases are curable, while 97% of diseases are non-curable resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and poor quality of life.
In the last 100 years, Medicine had a glorious journey, achieved several milestones, and had a great success story, especially in communicable diseases which have resulted in increased life expectancy. If we look at the last 100 years, the biggest success is decreased mortality rate and increased life expectancy increased to 73 years but this success story was challenged by sars Cov 2 (Covid19) which forced a global lockdown and put a big question mark on the field of preventive medicine. Still, we are not aware of the long-term impact of Covid on major organs and tissues. Genetic changes, DNA damage, long term safety and efficacy of Covid vaccine.
The million-dollar question is “Are we prepared for a future pandemic?”
The answer is No.
This pandemic has given us a big opportunity to shape medical science and help us to enter a new era of medical science. It has given pace to several innovations like tools of diagnosis, the use of nanotechnology, bioengineering, 3D bioprinting, CRISPAR CAS, Omics, Genomics, Geroscience, and aging. The use of AI & ML has opened up new hopes for future medicine and it is going to disrupt Medical science in clinical research, new drug development, diagnosis, and treatment.
There are many ways to categorize diseases Acute, Chronic, Acute to Chronic, Communicable, Non-communicable, Rare or Orphan, Lifestyle, Environmental, Pediatric, Geriatric, etc.
